Wisdom is as rare a feature of modern politics as it has been in any age. World history shows how few leaders and nations have been able to govern wisely, that is according to the “laws of nature and nature’s God” as our Founding Fathers put it in the Declaration of Independence. The founders were on to something.

Wisdom requires of a political leader a whole range of virtues that are necessary for the common good but that more often than not seem to be lacking in men and women in public life (prudence, justice, temperance, fortitude). To have wisdom in governance means to be accountable to a higher law and power that rules over the universe.

And that is why wisdom also requires the rare virtue of humility to recognize that the “governor” is simply an instrument of God and a servant of the people entrusted to his leadership. Everyone in political office needs this set of virtues but especially the President of the United States.

Join me in the prayer of Solomon – a prayer for wisdom – on behalf of President Trump, his legal advisors, his family, and all those who form his closest circle of support. They need wisdom now more than ever!

Solomon prayed:

You have shown great lovingkindness to Your servant David my father, according as he walked before You in truth and righteousness and uprightness of heart toward You; and You have reserved for him this great lovingkindness, that You have given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is this day. Now, O LORD my God, You have made Your servant king in place of my father David, yet I am but a little child; I do not know how to go out or come in. Your servant is in the midst of Your people which You have chosen, a great people who are too many to be numbered or counted. So give Your servant an understanding heart to judge Your people to discern between good and evil. For who is able to judge this great people of Yours? (1 Kings 3:7-9)
